The Short Version
Start with the name. A. Lange & Söhne does not make a "Lange 1 1920." The Lange 1 arrived in 1994, five years after the brand restarted in Glashütte, and the model line has never used that year in a reference name. When a listing invents a model number, that is your first data point about everything else on the page. Platinum Lange 1s exist. A "1920" one does not.
My pick for anyone who wants this watch: a genuine Lange 1, ideally pre-owned in platinum or rose gold. Everything else on this page is an option for people who cannot or will not spend five figures, and none of those options is a counterfeit.

What the Genuine Lange 1 Actually Is
- Case: 38.5 mm across, 9.8 mm thick, in platinum 950 on the platinum version. It wears like a 40 mm watch because of the thin bezel and long lugs.
- Movement: the manually wound calibre L121.1, twin mainspring barrels, 72 hours of reserve, and a free-sprung balance.
- Plate and finish: untreated German silver three-quarter plate, screwed gold chatons, and a balance cock engraved by hand, one at a time, by one person.
- Dial: off-center time, small seconds, outsize date in two separate apertures, and a power reserve indicator. The layout follows the golden ratio.
The outsize date is the part that matters most in this comparison. Two independent discs, a patented jumping mechanism, and a snap at midnight that lands clean. Fonts, aperture bevels, and disc spacing are all part of that mechanism.

Where Replicas Break Down
Lange is not Rolex. There is no deep pool of factories tooling up for it, because the demand is thin and the details are hard. What circulates are mostly generic cases with decorated movements dressed up to look German.
- Date: printed discs on one wheel that drift past midnight, or a single-window date with wrong proportions.
- Movement: an automatic calibre under a fake three-quarter plate, or a hand-wind with imitation chatons and laser engraving on the cock.
- Finish: sharp bevels, no black polishing, and perlage that looks sprayed on rather than cut.
- Proportions: a thicker case, a wider bezel, and subdials that sit slightly wrong. In person, this reads immediately.
The Risk Side
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States, and CBP seizes them at the border. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, with real prison exposure. There is no service network, no parts, and no resale market that will touch it. If you ever pass it off as genuine, that is a separate fraud problem.
Options, Cheapest First
- Nomos Glashütte. Tangente, Orion, or Zürich. Real in-house calibres made in Glashütte, clean German dial design, and a few thousand dollars new. The Tangente shares the sparse, functional look without pretending to be a Lange.
- Glashütte Original PanoReserve or PanoMaticLunar. This is the closest legal analog to a Lange 1: off-center dial, outsize date, German silver plate, hand-engraved details. Roughly $8,000 to $12,000 new, less used.
- Pre-owned Lange 1 in yellow or rose gold. Older references trade well below platinum money and are the actual watch. Buy from a dealer with papers and a service history.
- Platinum Lange 1, new or near-new. The pick if the budget is there. It is a watch you can hand to a watchmaker in twenty years and still get serviced.
Bottom Line
The comparison is short. A replica Lange 1 gets you a case that looks vaguely like a Lange from three feet away, and loses on the date, the movement, the finish, and the law. A Nomos or a Glashütte Original gets you most of the design language with none of that. If you want the actual object, save for the actual object, and buy the genuine one used if new is out of reach.
