Short answer
IWC does not list an Ingenieur with the reference 2040. The phrase comes from replica listings. Most of those listings sell a copy of the Ingenieur Automatic 40, a 40mm integrated-bracelet watch IWC released in 2023. Sellers use "2040" as a stock code, a model year, or a typo for the case size. No IWC reference number matches it. Real references for this model start with IW3289.
What the real watch is
IWC launched the Ingenieur Automatic 40 in 2023. The case measures 40mm across and about 10.7mm thick. Water resistance is 100m. The movement is calibre 32111, an automatic with 120 hours of power reserve. The bracelet is integrated into the case, in the style of the 1976 Ingenieur SL designed by Gerald Genta. IWC listed the steel version near $11,700 in the US at launch. Titanium versions cost more.
IWC service can confirm a reference number and serial number. A boutique performs that check at no cost.
What replica sellers ship
- Price. Listings for copies of the Ingenieur 40 sit between about $200 and $800.
- Movement. Most copies use a Chinese automatic or a Miyota 9015. Neither runs for 120 hours. A copy that stops after 40 hours does not hold the real specification.
- Case size. Listings say 40mm. Caliper measurements on delivered copies run from 40.5mm to 42mm.
- Caseback. Copies print a reference. The printed number often starts with IW3289 but does not match the dial color or the year.
- Bracelet. Real links are solid steel with tight end links. Copies show gaps at the case and lower weight.
Checks for any listing
- Read the reference. A listing that says "2040" is not using an IWC name.
- Ask for a caseback photo. Serial and reference should both appear.
- Ask for a power reserve test. Wind the watch, set it down, and note the stop time. 120 hours is the benchmark.
- Compare the price. A new steel Ingenieur 40 from an authorized dealer costs five figures. A $400 price is not a discount.
- Check the seller. A US seller of counterfeit goods commits trademark infringement.
Legal position in the United States
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell in the US. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit goods at ports. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Buyers who ship a copy from overseas risk seizure and loss of the payment. IWC holds the trademark on the Ingenieur name and the design.
What is not known
No public source explains where the "2040" tag started. Replica seller catalogs change names without notice. IWC has not announced an Ingenieur model for the year 2040.
