Most fake Audemars Piguet carbon watches are not forged carbon. They use carbon fiber sheet under clear resin, or a printed film laid over plastic or steel. Genuine AP carbon cases are compression-molded forged carbon with a random marbled pattern. The pattern is the first check.
What genuine forged carbon is
Audemars Piguet put forged carbon on a watch case in 2007 with the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Chronograph. The material is chopped carbon fiber strands mixed with resin, then pressed in a mold under heat and pressure. Fiber orientation is random. Two cases from the same mold do not look the same.
Density runs about 1.5 to 1.6 g/cm3. A 316L steel case runs near 7.9 g/cm3. A forged carbon case weighs less than half of a steel case of the same size. A fake with a steel mid-case under a carbon shell feels heavy in the hand.
How fakes fail the pattern test
- Visible twill weave. A 2x2 weave repeats in a grid. Forged carbon does not.
- Hydro-dipped film. The pattern sits on the surface. It fades or peels at case edges, bezel screws, and lug corners.
- Matched panels. Fake parts cut from one sheet match each other. Real forged carbon parts do not.
- Sharp edges. Forged carbon parts have rounded, resin-rich edges. Printed film follows the sharp line of the base part.
Checks beyond the case
Forged carbon Royal Oak Offshore references run calibers 3126/3840 and 2326. Fakes use an Asia 7750 or quartz. That shifts subdial spacing and crown height. Caseback engraving on fakes is shallow, and the serial number format does not match the reference. The number should repeat on the movement bridge. Lume plots on fakes glow weak or uneven.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. US Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments. A buyer who pays a seller outside the law has no practical way to recover money.
The OECD put the value of counterfeit and pirated goods in world trade at about $464 billion in 2019.
What is not known
No public data shows how many fake carbon AP watches circulate. Auction houses and AP service centers do not publish rejection rates.
