A counterfeit Rotonde Astrotourbillon is a fake of the Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon. The genuine watch carries the balance wheel and escapement at the end of a rotating arm. That arm orbits the dial center once per minute. A fake needs a real astrotourbillon to copy the motion. Most counterfeits sold under this name hold a static balance or a standard tourbillon pushed to one side of the dial.

What the genuine watch does
- Caliber 9451 MC. Manual wind. Made in-house by Cartier in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.
- The cage turns one full orbit per minute. The arm acts as the seconds indicator.
- Case size at the 2010 launch: 47 mm.
- Cases in white gold, pink gold and platinum, depending on reference.
- Sapphire caseback. The movement is visible from the back.
Cartier lists the caliber as 9451 MC. Published power reserve figures differ by reference. Confirm the current spec sheet with a boutique before you compare numbers.
Checks that separate real from fake
- Time the arm. One orbit equals 60 seconds. Use a stopwatch against a reference clock. A fake with a quartz module or a stock automatic will drift, jump or sit still.
- Measure the case. Use digital calipers. The launch reference is 47 mm. Fakes run 40 mm to 42 mm because the builder reuses a generic case.
- Inspect the cage. Genuine parts show beveled edges and polished flanks on both sides. Fake parts show laser-cut edges with no chamfer.
- Read the caseback. Look for a reference number, a serial number and metal stamps. Genuine engraving has depth and sharp walls. Fake engraving looks shallow and rounded.
- Check the dial text. The Cartier signature sits under the XII. Roman numerals sit on a chapter ring. Fake printing shows thick strokes and uneven spacing.
- Weigh it. Gold cases have real mass. Many fakes are steel with gold plating and feel light for the size.
- Confirm the movement marking. The caliber number and Cartier stamp appear on the bridge. Fakes carry no caliber stamp or a copied stamp on a plain plate.
Price and paperwork
Genuine Rotonde Astrotourbillon references sell in six figures at retail. Resale prices move with reference, metal and condition. A listing in the low thousands is not a watch with a functioning astrotourbillon. Ask for the original box, warranty card and Cartier service records. A service invoice names the reference and the caliber.

Where fakes show up
Counterfeits appear on general marketplaces, social media listings and classified pages. Common signs: stock photos only, no photo of the serial, requests for deposits before inspection, and sellers who refuse a video call. A genuine seller can show the arm turning on camera.
Limits of a photo check
Photos cannot prove the orbit. Ask for a video with a running seconds reference in frame. If the seller sends only catalog images, treat the listing as unverified.
